WWF, the global conservation organization that has been working in China for 33 years, is looking for a highly skilled professional to be a Flyway andMigrating Birds Programme Coordinator for WWF China Office to be based in Beijing. This position will report to Species Programme Director and cooperate with staff from related departments and programme officers within WWF China Programme Office.

Function:
The position will holds the main responsibility to implement the coastal flyway conservation and key migrating birds monitor projects mainly along the coastline in China; facilitate the regional and international cooperation on migrating birds monitor and conservation with other teams within WWF China, WWF network and other external partners; and take the charge of report and spread the project achievements. This position will need to support Species Program Director in other related tasks assigned as well.


Main Responsibilities:
1. Develop and update conservation strategies / proposals / work-plans / monitoring plans relating to coastal flyway conservation and key migrating birds monitor under the overall framework of WWF strategies and action plans.
2. Coordinate with internal and external partners to carry out black faced spoonbill and key shorebirds satellite tracking and population/habitat survey and monitor projects.
3. Support OCT to set up the education centre for communication on coastal and migrating birds’ conservation and projects highlights.
4. Tracking the projects progress and report/spread key protective achievements.
5. Cooperate with DCE department on partnership maintaining and fundraising activities.
6. Support the Species Program Director in other assigned tasks.


Working Relationship:
1. Internal: Immediate administrative supervisor is Species Program Director, and the technical executive supervisor is the Head of Northeast Programme. Also work closely with other WWF CPO colleagues; and WWF Network colleagues.
2. External: Regular interactions with project partners, government officials, other NGOs, local communities, donors, etc.


Qualifications:
1. Minimum of 2 years’ work experience in responsible positions relevant to this position.
2. A master’s degree in a relevant discipline, e.g. ecology, environment science, conservation, project management or in a relevant field is preferred.
3. Excellent written and verbal communication skills in Mandarin and English.
4. High level of competence in project management, communications, marketing /corporate and public relations communications. Excellent ability to work cross-culturally, proposal writing, policy analysis and information management
5. Excellent inter-personal skills, and team work skills including ability to internal communication, open mind strategic think, self-motivated and innovative and meet deadlines
6. Good current understanding of nature conservation issues and strategies; as well as well understanding of WWF’s work in China
7. Proactive, innovative and output-oriented personality
8. A high degree of personal integrity and commitment to conservation;
9. Ability to meet deadlines and develop partnership.

This position will report to GFTN Programme Manager, China Market Transformation Initiative.

FUNCTION:
This position will add technical capacity to WWF China’s Forest Program providing expertise related to pulp and paper sector, its forest management and fiber sourcing practices, production externalities, supply chain, certification standards and use of recycled and alternative fibers. Additionally, the Senior Program Officer (the Officer in short) will coordinate with key stakeholders in the industry, governments, and NGOs to promote consumer education or campaign about sustainable paper consumption in China.


RESPONSIBILITIES
The Officer develops and implements WWF-China strategies for promoting a more sustainable pulp, paper, and paper-based packaging industry. These strategies will help achieve WWF Market Transformation goals for more responsible sourcing of forest products from WWF priority places by engaging and transforming the global pulp & paper sector. The Officer works within WWF Forest team in WWF Market Transformation Initiative (MTI) and other relevant staff to engage with Chinese-based companies, WWF International Pulp and Paper lead and the New Generation Project manager, and other NGOs, associations, institutions and agencies focused on these issues. The Officer will also assist in increasing cooperation and communication with GFTN managers and WWF network to support their participants who are producing or importing pulp, paper, packaging or alternative fibers such as bamboo from China.

Duties include, but not limited to:
• Develop and implement strategies, annual targets and work plans for WWF-China work on pulp, paper and paper-based packaging, in coordination with other staff in GFTN, WWF markets and WWF-International pulp & paper teams.
• In coordination with GFTN-China Manager and other WWF-China markets staff engage GFTN-China and MTI target companies and other corporate partners to secure and maintain their commitment to responsible sourcing and production of pulp, paper and paper-based packaging, by providing outreach and education, technical assistance, monitoring, and overall relationship management.
• Directly manages selected company relationships as delegated. Reviews and provides feedback to GFTN-China company participants and other WWF-China corporate partners on purchasing policies, baseline assessments, action plans, and progress reports related to pulp, paper and paper-based packaging sourcing, production, and other life cycle issues.
• Coordinates with other WWF and Global Forest & Trade Network staff through the WWF Network to facilitate market links between WWF partner companies and suppliers, to drive improved forest management in WWF priority places, and to reduce the overall environmental footprint of the companies’ pulp, paper and paper-based packaging.
• Development, productions and circulation of practical guidance for businesses looking for a deeper understanding of the Chinese pulp and paper industry to build proper due diligence systems as well as the implications of the Lacey Act and EU Regulation on illegal logging for the pulp and paper sector and its suppliers.
• Identifies and tracks emerging issues, new scientific information, policy developments, issues and trends in the pulp, paper and paper-based packaging sectors, both in the Chinese context and globally, as well as developments within the WWF Network, to inform WWF China and GFTN-China strategy. Liaison with industry associations, other organizations and leading companies to catalyze on existing data and research.
• Promotes the New Generation Plantation Concept to key companies and Institutions in China as part of ensuring responsible sourcing of raw material for Pulp and Paper, in relation to the global initiative managed by WWF International.
• Promotes FSC certification and labelling to key companies and institutions and individual consumers in China as a tool to ensuring responsible sourcing of raw material or responsible consumption for Pulp and Paper.
• Implements corporate fundraising strategies to support the programmatic objectives of WWF-China MTI and GFTN-China efforts and coordinates the submission of internal progress reports, funding proposals, and donor reports.
• Represents WWF-China at meetings, external workshops and conferences with external contacts on pulp, paper and paper-based packaging issues of relevance to the GFTN-China and WWF-China markets teams.
• Engage with the Chinese government agencies to identify opportunities to work together to promote responsible sourced and produced pulp, paper and paper-based packaging products.
• Engage with FSC China to inform them about opportunities and needs for increasing FSC labelling of paper products in China.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

Working Relationships
Internal:
Report to GFTN-China Manager. Interacts regularly with WWF-China Forest and other MTI staff, Markets staff, Focal Priority Place staff, TRAFFIC, Program Marketing, Development, Communications, Budgeting and Accounting, and with WWF Network staff including the Global Forest & Trade Network staff, WWF-International Pulp & Paper and NGP staff, and other WWF offices and programs.
External:
Frequent contact with non-staff individuals, including private sector staff, FSC China, other NGOs, trade associations, certification systems, government agencies and other experts. Enhances professional reputation through participation in business and environment forums, publication of results and lessons learned and networking with professionals in general area of interests.


Minimum Work Requirements:
Experience:
• Knowledge of issues and trends in both the Chinese and global pulp, paper and paper-based packaging sectors, related to responsible forest and plantation management, forest products trade, clean production and efficiency, and forest/product certifications associated with pulp, paper and paper-based packaging is required.
•Experience with supply chain management, lifecycle analysis, and corporate social/environmental responsibility is preferred.
• Success in advocating for and achieving programmatic objectives within the private sector preferred.
• Corporate experience and overseas experience, especially with the European, American and/or and Latin American paper sectors preferred.

Education:
• A Bachelor’s Degree is required. A Master's Degree is preferred in relevant field such as pulp, paper or paper-based packaging technology, supply chain management, natural resources management, sustainability, business or forestry. A minimum of 5 years program or other working professional experience is required.
Skills and Abilities:
• Must have excellent oral and written communication skills in English.
• Must be able to meet deadlines, and effectively prioritize under time constraints in the face of dynamic administrative, budget and political parameters.
• Must be able to manage by objectives with considerable independence, competence and discretion.
• Ability to work effectively as part of a high performing team composed of representatives from different partner organizations while keeping internal WWF managers and project staff current on relevant developments.
• A high-level of interpersonal, diplomatic and negotiation skills.
• Ability to interface and collaborate effectively with internal and external partners and organizations.
• Excellent project administration, management and organizational skills.
• Manage complex partnership arrangements with tactful diplomacy.
• Experience working within a large and complex organization across geographical, cultural and language boundaries.
• Familiarity and proficiency with Microsoft Office applications and database use.
